Mashonda Released New EP ‘Note to Self’ + ‘Complicated’ Visual

Singer/songwriter Mashonda, has released the enlightening “Note to Self” EP as well as the passionate music video “Complicated” via Tifrere Music/Beatroot. The five-song EP is a sonic collection of self-reflection.

Known for working with Jay-Z, DMX, and Raphael Saadiq, The multi-dimensional Mashonda‘s talents span music, books, and art curation, shares her lessons learned navigating romantic relationships throughout the last five years. Mashonda‘s sensual vocals navigate listeners through songs that tackle bliss (“Positive Distraction”), sexuality (“Forbidden Fruit”), heartache (“Runaway”), compromise (“Complicated”), and enlightenment (“Note to Self”).

Mashonda compliments the music’s healing, therapeutic mood with interludes that serve as affirmations. The EP was co-written and co-produced by Mashonda and The Millennials.

“Note to Self” offers listeners a healthy, realistic outlook on relationships. “This project is a return to my first love, music, on my terms,” Mashonda states. “Note to Self is a diary that explores the navigation of love and pain and the transformation that comes with that journey. Every word of this EP is inspired by my personal experiences through the human emotions that come with love.”

Mashonda also released the new visual for “Complicated,” which she wrote the treatment for the video and states the short is the manifestation of a vision she has nurtured for more than a year. “The visual expression of ‘Complicated’ was just as important to me as the music,” she says. “While writing the treatment, I was intentional about layering in parts that are uniquely me. From shooting in my old neighborhood in Harlem, to the juxtaposition of the clothing to the settings, I wanted it to be as carefully curated as our complex relationships with humans are; every time we think we understand the picture, there is a deeper meaning to explore. Everything in the video — the movement, the artistry, the love interest, the city — represents the complexity of relationships — the love and the pain — sensuality and dismay.”

“Complicated” follows “Note to Self“‘s two preceding singles and music videos for the sensual “Forbidden Fruit,” and “Positive Distraction.”
